A volume heat exchanger is a heat exchanger that uses cold and hot fluids alternately flowing through the heat storage body (packing) in the heat storage chamber to exchange heat. In a wall volume heat exchanger, the cold and hot fluids are separated by a solid wall, and heat exchange is conducted through the wall; therefore, it is also called a surface heat exchanger.
According to the different heat transfer methods, volume heat exchangers can be divided into three categories: mixed volume heat exchangers, regenerative volume heat exchangers, and wall volume heat exchangers.
Introduction
A volume heat exchanger mainly consists of a body, a steam coil assembly, steam inlet and outlet, and cold and hot water inlet and outlet. To prevent corrosion of the inner surface of the body, an anticorrosion alloy layer is sprayed on the surface, and a paint layer is applied over the alloy layer. The original pipe box is removed, and the steam coil is directly connected externally through the flange. This makes the utility model simple and reasonable in structure, with a long service life, good heat exchange effect, and energy saving. It is available in horizontal and vertical forms.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Traditional Volume Heat Exchangers
In building internal hot water supply, the traditional volume heat exchanger is the most used and longest-used heat exchange equipment.
Advantages:
(1) It has both heat exchange and heat storage functions. The upper part of the heat exchange tube bundle in a volume heat exchanger is the heat storage part, which is a constant-temperature hot water area. It has a large heat storage capacity and can adapt to changes in hourly heat consumption. It can provide a large storage and regulation volume for a hot water supply system with uneven water use to adapt to changes in water load. The outlet water temperature is stable, and the water supply is safe and reliable.
(2) The pressure loss of the heated water passing through the tank is very small. Because the cross-sectional area of the cold water passing through the volume heat exchanger is very large, and the flow rate is less than 0.01 m/s, the pressure loss is very small, generally only 0.1~0.2 m. This is extremely advantageous for maintaining the pressure balance of cold and hot water supply at the water use points.
(3) It is not strict with the heating medium. The volume heat exchanger has a large heat storage volume. Its heating load can be calculated according to the maximum hourly heat consumption. It can halve the load of the boiler and pipe network, greatly saving the investment of the heating medium supply system. At the same time, the use of the heating medium is relatively uniform, which is conducive to improving the boiler thermal efficiency and extending its service life.
(4) Simple structure, easy management, can withstand water pressure, low noise.
Disadvantages:
(1) Poor heat transfer effect, primary heat exchange is difficult to meet the requirements. Traditional volume heat exchangers have low heat medium flow rate and short flow path, resulting in low heat transfer coefficient (K value) and insufficient heat exchange. Therefore, some engineering designs have to use two-stage series heat exchange to meet the requirements.
(2) Low volume utilization rate. The effective heat storage volume of traditional volume heat exchangers is 75%~80%, and the volume utilization rate is low.
(3) Large volume, large floor area, high initial investment. The tank of a horizontal traditional volume heat exchanger is long (2087~5875 mm). In addition to the space required for extracting the heat exchange tube bundle during maintenance, the floor area is large. When two heat exchangers are used in series, the floor area is doubled. Although the floor area of a vertical traditional volume heat exchanger is not large, its height is large (2050~3220 mm), requiring more steel and resulting in a large initial investment.
(4) Water quality is easily polluted. The variable temperature zone and cold water zone at the bottom of the tank are prone to the breeding of legionella bacteria, affecting water quality.
(5) Not energy-efficient.
Technical Transformation of Volume Heat Exchangers
In view of the problems of traditional volume heat exchangers, there are mainly two ideas for improving heat transfer efficiency:
1. Increase the heating area
(1) Add heating coils above the original heating coil in the same direction, side direction, or reverse direction.
(2) Change the heating U-shaped coil to a tube bundle type heating tube to increase the density and number of heating tubes.
(3) Change tube heating to plate or spiral plate heating.
(4) Replace large-diameter heating tubes with small-diameter heating tubes.
