Unequal section plate heat exchangers utilize heat transfer plates pressed into a herringbone corrugated pattern with varying cross-sectional areas for the two fluid channels. Adjacent plates form wide and narrow flow channels with a cross-sectional area ratio of approximately 2:1. The corner holes on the plates are also sized accordingly; the fluid with higher flow rate passes through the larger corner holes and wide channels, while the fluid with lower flow rate passes through smaller corner holes and narrow channels.

In the heating industry, the processing volume of hot and cold media is often unequal. This is because in heating applications, the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the hot medium is large (generally around 50℃), resulting in a smaller processing volume. Conversely, the temperature difference for the cold medium is smaller (generally around 25℃), resulting in a larger processing volume. Using conventional plate heat exchangers would lead to unequal inter-plate flow velocities (in single-pass flow), affecting heat transfer efficiency. However, by using the B-series unequal section plate heat exchangers, the medium with a larger processing volume flows through the wider channel and the medium with a smaller processing volume flows through the narrower channel, achieving better heat transfer efficiency.
